We were faced with extreme drought conditions in Colorado, especially in the prairie locations. Even so, we were able to make the most of it and turn up some nice species to photograph. We fared much better in the Rockies. Our guide, Peter DeGennaro, did a great job to keep us moving to find butterflies. I appreciated that we were able to go back to Pass Lake, below Loveland Pass, where I was able to get better photos of my target species for that area, Rockslide Checkerspot. Thanks to Robert Gilson for carrying my cameras for me as I traversed the talus slope to reach that butterfly. As always, the restaurant choices were outstanding and the lodging was comfortable. This was my 6th trip with Fauna Ventures, and each trip has been wonderful!
Colorado Rockies & Prairie Butterflies
Thank you so much for joining us for your sixth Fauna Ventures tour! The drought certainly made for some challenging conditions, so we’re especially glad that Peter was able to keep things moving and find some great butterflies along the way. It was wonderful to return to Pass Lake below Loveland Pass, and I was glad to be there to help with the search for the Rockslide Checkerspot and to see you get better photos of your target species. We truly appreciate your continued support over so many trips and always enjoy having you along. We look forward to sharing another butterfly adventure with you soon!

This was my third butterfly tour with Fauna Ventures and once again, it was a wonderful experience. Our guide, Peter DeGennaro, is a top-notch guide who consistently went the extra mile to make sure the group saw as many different butterfly species as possible. Despite the drought in Colorado, Peter did everything he could to mitigate the impact of the drought on what we saw and on our experience. I wholeheartedly endorse Fauna Ventures if you are interested in a butterfly tour in the U.S. or overseas.

Once again Fauna Ventures has provided a wonderful butterfly experience. The trip to Colorado to find new species in the plains prairie, and at high altitudes, was fun and exciting. Daily sightings were shared freely among the group and evening dinners provided lots of camaraderie. Altitude considerations were expertly handled with plentiful drinks, and allowing everyone to go at their own pace. Very enjoyable, again.

We thoroughly enjoyed looking for butterflies to add to our life list with knowledgeable group leaders. Everyone in our group was friendly and courteous allowing all members to get photos of each species. Though the weather was a little trying on a couple of days, that did not stop Peter and Rob from making the most of the day. It was very nice to have everything planned for us including accommodations and meals. Thank you for a fabulous experience!!
