Discover the Northeast’s Secret Butterflies

Late May in New England and eastern New York brings a fleeting chance to see some of North America’s rarest spring butterflies. This unique five-day tour is timed to overlap the flights of two especially elusive species: the Bog Elfin and the Early Hairstreak.

From black spruce bogs and sandy pine barrens to the cool ridges of the Berkshires, we’ll explore a wide range of habitats in search of these specialties—along with a supporting cast of Azures, skippers, and spring whites. Each day offers the chance to add another rarity, all within easy reach of our comfortable Springfield, Massachusetts base.

Sunday, May 24 – Arrival

Fly into Bradley International Airport (BDL). Overnight in Springfield, MA (group hotel). Evening orientation and trip briefing.

Day 2

Day 2 image

Monday, May 25 – Bog Elfin (Ashburnham, MA)

Morning visit to a black spruce bog for Bog Elfin (50% success rate on a given day). Afternoon options include nearby Fannie Stebbins Wildlife Refuge for Harvester and possible early Bronze Copper.

Tuesday, May 26 – Pine Barrens

At Montague Plains WMA, we’ll target Cobweb Skipper plus Frosted ElfinDusted Skipper, and Indian Skipper. Optional side trip for the elusive Hessel’s Hairstreak

Day 4

Wednesday, May 27 – Albany Pine Bush

A full day at Albany Pine Bush for Karner BlueMottled DuskywingCommon Roadside-Skipper, and more. On the way back, we’ll stop in Lenox, MA for Mustard White.

Day 5

Thursday, May 28 – Mount Greylock & Berkshires

Morning on Mt. Greylock for Early Hairstreak and West Virginia White, followed by an afternoon at Moran WMAfor Arctic Skipper along cool forest streams.

Day 6

Friday, May 29 – Weather Flex / Cleanup Day

Reserved to revisit sites or species missed earlier in the week, depending on conditions. Possible targets include Bog ElfinCobweb Skipper, or another attempt for Early Hairstreak. Trip concludes this evening; departures from BDL may be scheduled for Friday night or Saturday morning.
